Roe v. Wade overturned: Women’s health organizations react
National women’s health organizations have posted statements across social media networks following the overturning of Roe v. Wade on Friday morning.
At 9:26, the official Planned Parenthood Twitter account stated: “The Supreme Court just overturned Roe v. Wade, ending our constitutional right to abortion. We know you may be feeling a lot of things right now — hurt, anger, confusion. Whatever you feel is OK.””
“We’re here with you — and we’ll never stop fighting for you,” the tweet continued.
If someone needs an abortion, the organization said “help is available to make sure you get the care you need,” in a follow-up tweet with an included telephone number (1-800-230-PLAN) and link (http://AbortionFinder.org).
The National Women’s Health Network
In a 9:55 a.m. post, The National Women’s Health Network posted said “This is a horrific day for reproductive rights in this country, but let us be clear: this fight is FAR from over,” with a link to its full response to the SCOTUS decision and a link (https://nwhn.org/abortionrepeal/).
In the response, the organization called Friday a “day of National tragedy,” stating that the overturning of Roe v. Wade “rolled back fifty years of settled law in one fell swoop.”
In the months ahead, the organization said it will “will fight to restore Federal abortion rights, expand abortion access, and educate the public.” To do this, the NWHN said it would hold “elected officials accountable for their stance on abortion access,” and also provide “trustworthy and up-to-date information” about abortions to the “people who need it the most” in print and online and expand its partnership with Plan C, which it described as a “group of veteran public health advocates, researchers, social justice activists, and digital strategists working to make the abortion pill accessible to all women.”
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
In a 9:55 a.m. post, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said “the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson is a destructive setback for ob-gyns and patients,” adding that the organization will “continue with unwavering resolve to support all people who struggle against interference with the patient–physician relationship.”
The post also included a graphic highlighting a quote from ACOG President, Abbasi Hoskins.
National Women’s Law Center
In a 9:50 a.m. post, the National Women’s Law Center said “It’s hard to know what to do or how to feel. No matter what the Court says, people will ALWAYS need abortion care, which means supporting abortion funds and independent clinics is essential.”
“We will always fight to make sure people have access to the care they need,” the post continued.
In follow-up posts, the organization posted links to supporting abortion funds and information with links about funding independent clinics.
Whole Woman’s Health
In a 9:39 a.m. post, Whole Woman’s Health said the US Supreme Court “just turned its back on the fundamental right to abortion care,” adding that this is “not the reality we should be facing in 21st century America. We are heartbroken for all of our patients, friends, neighbors, and staff who are facing insurmountable barriers.”
In follow-up posts, the organization said it would keep fighting against those “responsible for this monstrous attack on the people we serve until reproductive healthcare is once again available in local communities everywhere.” An additional post cited the organization’s Abortion Wayfinder Program for people seeking financial and logistical support in states “where abortion is or soon will be banned.”
Center for Reproductive Rights
In a 10:19 a.m. post, the Center for Reproductive Rights said “the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has OVERTURNED Roe v. Wade, decimating the right to abortion in the U.S. and opening the door for states eager to ban abortion outright,” adding that the decision is “WRONG” in all capital letters.
In a follow-up post, the organization posted a quote from Nancy Northup, Center President and CEO, stating that “the Court’s opinion delivers a wrecking ball to the constitutional right to abortion, destroying the protections of Roe v. Wade, and utterly disregarding the one in four women in America who make the decision to end a pregnancy…”
